The X social media platform will soon close the Communities feature and implement group chat infrastructure through XChat. Within this strategy, XChat has been launched as an independent iOS application.
Available on the App Store, XChat enables users to message, share files, make voice and video calls, and join group chats through their connections on X. Thus, the community-based interaction experience has transformed into a messaging-focused structure.
New Communication Approaches
XChat partially distances itself from X's vision of an "everything app" by adopting a more modular product strategy. Instead of the single app concept envisioned by Elon Musk, separate applications are being developed under the xAI ecosystem to meet different needs.
The app's privacy-focused features include message deletion and editing, protection for lost messages, screenshot blocking, and PIN protection. Additionally, according to the company, there are no ads or tracking mechanisms, and all messages are end-to-end encrypted. However, some security experts have expressed concerns about the reliability of this encryption.
The transition from Communities to XChat is expected to quickly move existing community users to the new platform, thereby supporting the initial growth of the application. Furthermore, it is stated that XChat is just the beginning and that the messaging product family will expand over time.
