Google has developed a new application aimed at enhancing users' pronunciation skills in foreign languages, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of its popular translation app Google Translate. This long-awaited feature goes beyond mere text translation, aiming to assist users in learning the correct pronunciation.
With the Practice option within the app, users can listen to the words they have translated or repeat them themselves. When the Pronounce option is activated, the app analyzes the user's speech and evaluates how the words are pronounced. This system identifies mispronunciations and provides instant feedback while also showing the phonetic spelling of the correct pronunciation.
Pronunciation Practice and User Needs
It is reported that nearly one-third of mobile users utilize Google Translate for speaking and listening practice. This indicates that the new feature is not just an additional tool but a significant development that responds to real needs.
The new pronunciation practice feature is currently being gradually rolled out only on the Android platform to users in the US and India in English, Spanish, and Hindi. It should also be noted that Google has not provided a specific date for when this feature will be available in other languages and regions.
Additionally, Google shared updated information about the current scope of the Translate app. The app currently supports over 250 languages, including those at risk of extinction, and translates over 1 trillion words each month with more than 1 billion users.
