Amazon Increases AI Investments in Anthropic

AI investments between Amazon and Anthropic

Amazon has signed a new agreement with Anthropic to accelerate its investments in artificial intelligence. Under this framework, the new investment amount that Amazon will make to Anthropic has been set at $5 billion, bringing the total investment to $13 billion. In the future, Amazon is expected to make an additional investment of $20 billion in this area.

Anthropic has agreed to spend over $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next decade. This collaboration will allow the company to increase the computing capacity needed for training and operating its AI model, Claude; this means providing up to 5 GW of new resources in total.

Technical Foundations of the Investment

The agreement is based on Amazon's Graviton CPU, which is notable for its low power consumption, and the Trainium AI accelerator chips that serve as an alternative to Nvidia. Products ranging from Trainium2 to Trainium4 are included within the scope of this collaboration. While Trainium4 chips, which are currently not available on the market, are part of this agreement, the latest technology Trainium3 chip was introduced to users in December. Anthropic will also have the option to purchase future Amazon chips that will be developed.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, emphasized the importance of the agreement by stating:

Our users are expressing increased interest in Claude's capabilities, and we need to strengthen our infrastructure to meet this demand. Thanks to our partnership with Amazon, we will be able to offer Claude to our large user base on AWS while continuing our AI research.

This agreement also brings to mind Amazon's large-scale collaboration with OpenAI just two months ago. In the previous agreement with OpenAI, Amazon participated in a funding round that valued OpenAI at approximately $730 billion, contributing $50 billion. Both companies continue to compete to convince investors as they prepare for potential public offerings.
