Apple and Google Keep RCS Messaging Secure

Apple and Google keep RCS messaging secure

Apple and Google have developed a new feature to ensure that their users can communicate more securely between iPhone and Android devices. With this feature, end-to-end encryption for RCS (Rich Communication Services) messages has been made available with the iOS 26.5 update.

iPhone users on iOS 26.5 and Android users with the updated Google Messages app will gradually be able to activate this feature through certain operators. When the encryption feature is enabled, a new lock icon will appear in users' conversations, enhancing security.

RCS is a modern messaging standard designed to replace SMS. It stands out with functionalities such as supporting higher quality media sharing, providing read receipts, and enabling group chats. The introduction of RCS support by Apple marks a significant development in cross-platform communication; however, the lack of encryption for these messages had raised security concerns.

End-to-End Encryption Support

The new end-to-end encryption support has been made possible through the RCS Universal Profile 3.0 standard created by GSMA. This framework, developed through the collaboration of Apple and Google, aims to enhance the security of messages sent over RCS while also addressing vulnerabilities in communication. The importance of this collaboration was also emphasized in Google's official blog.

Apple continues to assert that iMessage provides the best communication experience among its devices, while highlighting the role of the new RCS support in ensuring security, especially across different platforms.
