Glydways, which offers innovative solutions in urban transportation, has taken a significant step in developing driverless small capsule vehicles by securing an investment of $170 million. This investment is led by Suzuki Motor Corporation, ACS Group, and Khosla Ventures, with Mitsui Chemicals, Gates Frontier, and Obayashi Corporation also participating.
Goals for Autonomous Transportation System
The new funding is intended to expand Glydways' pilot projects for its autonomous capsule transportation system. The company aims to enhance infrastructure integration within cities and achieve a large-scale commercial launch by 2027.
Developed under the leadership of Jesse Levinson, this system promotes the use of electric and driverless small capsules as an alternative to traditional public transport methods. The vehicles operate on specially constructed dedicated lanes approximately two meters wide in the city, allowing passengers to be directly transported to their desired locations via pods summoned through an app. This approach offers a flexible model that operates on demand, replacing the classic public transport methods based on fixed stops.
Low-Cost Urban Transportation Solution
Aiming to establish a high-capacity transportation network at a lower cost, Glydways seeks to provide a more efficient solution compared to existing rail systems. It is claimed that the system can transport thousands of passengers per hour and significantly reduce infrastructure costs. Thanks to its fully electric structure, this transportation model is unaffected by traffic congestion, aiming to reduce the need for private vehicles in large cities and make urban transportation infrastructure more efficient.
